December 5 Afternoon tea
The theme for today's postgrad afternoon tea is "healthy". On the menu is:
  • orange juice
  • Fanta (the label says it has orange in it therefore it must be good for you)
  • cherries (of the Cadbury Ripe variety)
  • strawberries (of the Allens variety with cream conveniently attached)
  • and an orange (from the always-in-season Terry's Chocolate family of oranges).
And for those who don't like "healthy", Tim Tams are making yet another appearance at postgrad afternoon tea.

September 30 Poster afternoon - popular choice award

CSSEPG sponsored a popular choice award at the Postgraduate Poster Afternoon - a $50 voucher to Borders. 37 votes were received, each nominating 1 - 3 posters.

The outright winner was Lars Yencken, who managed to fight off some aggresive block voting from the Grids group.

The list of posters that received more than one vote were: amy, anthony, cdong, caedwa, edwardi, gavinb, htsai, jiayu, lljy, marcosd, bhuiyanm, mumer, naron, nthio, jingy, rshelton, rfk, narayans, srikumar.

If you enjoyed the Poster Afternoon and would like to see it happen again, please let James Bailey or the CSSEPG committee know. Some students have suggested we run a colloquium - we've set up a wiki page for a discussion.

June 06 CSSEPG Afternoon tea
If computer scientists are a machine for converting coffee into theorems, then chocolate is the grease of that machine. Starring an amiable selection of Tim-Tams (black forest fantasy, creamy truffle temptation, chilli choc fling, chewy caramel), a small box of Tic-Tacs and the widest and best selection of chit-chat that you will find anywhere on a Monday afternoon. :)

May 11 Requesting Activity Funding
All CSSEPG members are welcome to suggest ideas for activities at any time. This is the best way of approaching us.

May 02 CSSEPG Afternoon tea
As the current committee has organised morning/afternoon tea exactly zero times since it was elected, today's afternoon tea is brought to you by the number 0 and involves zero-shaped items courtesy of Donut King. Also tea, coffee (if I can find them) and possibly some left over soft drink from pizza the other week.

This Wednesday (the 9th of June) the CSSEPG are taking over ICT Theatre 3 from 5:15pm for the first ever CSSEPG MOVIE SCREENING!!! We are currently tracking down DVDs such as Matrix (choose the red pill), Donnie Darko (why are you wearing that stupid bunny suit), and Finding Nemo (mate), but we need your help. "What can I do," I hear you ask...
...well, email cssepg and let us know what film you would like to see. The final choice will be made democratically on Wednesday night. Finally, even if you are not seeing the film, there will be the possibility of heading out for a cheap dinner somewhere in the area. So if you are interested in this one then rock up to ICT Theatre 3 sometime around 7pm.

ps. Apologies to coursework postgrads who are probably still heavily into study mode. The CSSEPG are scheming for some end of semester excuse to drink beer and recover.

May 18 CSSEPG survey
CSSEPG are doing a survey to find out what activities you would like to do. If you didn't receive a survey by email or you don't like using email, then print out the survey, use a pen to fill it in, and return it to one of the committee in person.

Update 18 June 2006: See the results.
April 28 `Research Writing and Process' seminar series 2004
The `Research Writing and Process' seminar series is back for 2004. If you are a research postgraduate who has not attended a previous seminar series, you should attend. See the schedule or contact Peter Stuckey for more information.

April 27 Postgraduate morning tea this Friday.
Hi everyone, `fortune -s` says, "Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so" (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy). So afternoon tea time it is. Not only that, but CSSE Postgraduate Group afternoon tea is new and improved and in the morning. 11:00AM (right before the postgraduate seminar) on Friday the 30th of April in the Level 4 Staff Room. Tea, coffee, snacks and anything else you would like to suggest to cssepg address will be provided (This claim is impossible, but suggestions will be approximated). So take an hour off work this Friday and come and support the social aspect of being a postgraduate within CSSE.

April 26 Open position on CSSEPG committee - coursework postgrads only.
We have a position on the committee for a coursework postgrad (masters by coursework or postgrad diploma). If you are interested, email cssepg with the subject "Coursework Postgrad Nomination" and your name by Monday 3 May. Update 4/5/04: No nominations were received, so the committee will not change.

March 29 CSSEPG Elections.
See the CSSEPG's 2004 AGM Minutes to find out about our new executive and non-executive committee members (and also about what the Group has been up to over the last year).

March 9 Annual General Meeting.
The CSSE Postgrad Group's AGM will be held Friday March 26th 1:00pm in the ICT level 4 staff tearoom. Elections will be held for all offices, the Group's constitution will be updated, and free pizza & soft drink will be provided!

2003

December 19 CSSEPG Xmas BBQ.
All CSSE postgrads and their partners/children are invited to attend the CSSEPG 2003 christmas barbeque! Academics are also most welcome. 12:45pm start, Tuesday December 23rd, Level 1 balcony (with seats/tables inside). The tentative menu is sausages, veggie burgers, soft drinks and icey poles. Cost: free! Please email Ben with attendance numbers and food requirements, to help us in our planning.

July 14 Postgrad Pizza this Thursday.
To welcome new research postgraduates going through CSSE orientation this Thursday (July 17th), we're holding a pizza lunch. This will run like last time (but hopefully with a better selection of toppings!), starting 12:30pm in ICT Room 5.08. All CSSE pgrads are welcome!

May 21 Postgrad Afternoon Tea's are Back - Pizza This Monday.
The Postgrad Afternoon Tea's are back, starting this Monday May 26th and continuing most Monday's 1:30-2:30pm in ICT Room 5.08 (the Dept's boardroom - so we have to be very clean!). The afternoon tea's are completely informal, and provide postgrads a location to have a chat and enjoy some CSSEPG-provided refreshments (usually this will be soft drink, biscuits, etc.). This Monday we're eating pizza to celebrate the end of Semester 1! See the pgrad tea schedule for all the latest meeting times.

May 21 AUSCC03 Call for Tutorial Proposals.
A number of undergraduates from the Dept's of CSSE and IS are organising the inaugural Australian Undergraduate Students' Computing Conference to be held here at Melbourne Uni, September 24-26. Although paper submissions are open only to undergraduates and honours students, postgraduates at Australian universities are invited to submit tutorial proposals. Typical conference-style proposals and full slide-sets are due June 7th and July 7th respectively, and should be targetted at an undergraduate level. This is a unique opportunity for us, particularly those planning on following a career in academia/research as conference tutorial presentations are usually made only by academics (i.e. this would look great on your CV!). See http://www.auscc.org/ for more.

May 21 Microwave for the Coursework Students.
Until now there has been no after-hours access to a microwave for the coursework masters (MSSE and MIT) and 4th year undergraduate students, as they do not have access to any of the kitchens in levels higher than Level 2, and the Dept did not outfit Level 2 with a microwave. Together with the Department, MU-CSA and contributions from various undergraduates, we have purchased a microwave for Level 2. We wish the coursework students happy eating!

May 21 Correction - Complex Systems Group Details.
In our recent (May 16th) announcement about the Complex Systems Group, we incorrectly reported the Group's email address as (csg at cs.mu.oz.au). It is actually (markn+csg at cs.mu.oz.au). The CSG also has a great website at http://lipatti.cs.mu.oz.au/csg/ which you should see for more information about the CSSEPG-affiliated Group.

May 16 CSSEPG Webpage - a Wiki for the Postgrads.
Gavin Baker has had the great idea of starting a CSSEPG Wiki, and has generously implemented one for us on our website - we will be adding some pages to the Wiki (ie. tools, links, etc.) in the next few hours to get things started, but go to http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/pgrad/pgwiki/index.php to have a look! A Wiki is a collaborative application that allows a group to create web content together using a very simple markup language, without the content having to undergoe review prior to its posting. You should feel free to post things on our wiki, especially ideas, tools or resources that others might find useful!

May 16 Research Group - Machine Learning & Data Mining Reading Group.
The Machine Learning and Data Mining Reading Group is having its first meeting Monday May 26th from 10-11:30am, in ICT Room 3.04. Meetings are expected to continue in the same slot fortnightly, and are primarly targetted at staff and pgrads researching in classification, regression, clustering and assocation rule mining (broadly speaking, ML and DM). Although meetings will be informal, it is the aim of the group to cover reasonably advanced results from the literature. See the group's page at http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~bir/mldmrg/ for more.

May 16 Research Group - Complex Systems Lunch.
The Complex Systems Group is running a weekly Complex Systems Lunch which (currently) involves 2 staff and 4 students informally discussing anything that is complex and dynamic over lunch. The Lunch has been going for 2 months now, but other staff/students working in Complex Systems are most welcome to come along too! Contact Mark Ng at (markn at cs.mu.oz.au) or the CSG at (csg at cs.mu.oz.au) for more information.

May 16 Openning for New Postgraduate Seminar Coordinator.
Jun Liu will be stepping down from the position of CSSE postgraduate seminar coordinator, having held the role since November 2001. Our sincere thanks, Jun, for your generous service over the past two years! Along with Jun, the CSSEPG would like to invite a CSSE research postgraduate to volunteer for the seminar coordinator position. Please email the CSSEPG executive at (cssepg at cs.mu.oz.au) if you are interested in volunteering. If there are a number of people interested, we can investigate some kind of informal election (over pizza, of course!), etc. An announcement will be made in a few weeks, introducing the new coordinator. For more on the postgraduate seminar series, see its webpage at http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/pgrad/seminars/.

April 24 `Research Writing and Process' seminar series.
The department has been running a series on research writing and understanding the research process for postgraduate students. This series has been well received with a good turn-out of CSSE postgrads - it is not too late to join! See the series' schedule or contact Paul Gruba for further information.

April 17 New Machine Learning and Data Mining Reading Group.
A Machine Learning and Data Mining Reading Group has been established upon discussions with ML/DM academics at the University of Melbourne. The new Group targets all postgraduate students and academic staff researching in the broad areas of classification/regression, clustering and association rule mining. The Group will meet most weeks to discuss interesting research papers in ML/DM, ML/DM research issues and progress of members' research projects. Refreshments will be provided by the CSSEPG. All interested staff/students are encouraged to email Ben Rubinstein (bir at cs.mu.oz.au) with their name and research interests. See the MLDMRG website for more about the Group.

April 17 Call for postgrad activity proposals.
CSSE postgraduates are invited to submit proposals for new CSSEPG activities. The Group plans on continuing to run the postgraduate afternoon teas and providing pizza after some postgraduate seminars. Proposals need not require financial support, but there is scope for limited assistance. Possible proposals could include sport teams (as in previous years) or other social activites, an research/reading groups or other academic activities, for example. See the CSSEPG Activity Proposal Procedure for more.

April 17 New CSSEPG website released.
The long-outdated CSSE Postgraduate Group website (at http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/pgrad/) has been updated with a new look and more up-to-date information; in the future the website will take a more central role in CSSEPG publicity. The CSSEPG executive (cssepg at cs.mu.oz.au) welcome all feedback.

April 17 New committee elected.
A new committee for 2003 was elected at the Group's recent March 14th AGM. Meet them here.
