The first part of the tutorial will focus on why machine translation is important, and why it is so hard. I will give an overview of current machine translation systems, focusing on the problems they face. Next I will introduce the state of the art in research, including rule, example and statistical based methodologies. In the second part of the tutorial will give a more in depth look at some of the problems and their solutions in various systems, including a demonstration. The tutorial will conclude with pointers to more information.
Francis Bond is a senior researcher at the NTT Communication Science Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, currently working on natural language understanding. Research interests include machine translation (especially Japanese to English), computational lexicography, HPSG and topics in syntactic typology, especially number, countability and numeral classifiers. He is the author of Translating the Untranslatable: A solution to the Problem of Generating English Determiners. He is a member of ACL, ANLP, ALS, Amnesty International and the Deep Linguistic Processing with HPSG Initiative (DELPH-IN).
